The two processes
Single-stage (one-step): injection and blowing happen in one machine; the preform never fully cools before it is blown. Two-stage: preforms are injection-moulded separately, cooled and stored, then reheated and stretch-blown on a separate blow machine (reheat stretch-blow).
The trade-offs
Single-stage suits lower volumes, specialty and wide-mouth or cosmetic containers — no preform handling, but limited output and less neck or format choice. Two-stage dominates high-volume beverage: you buy or mould preforms, store them compactly, and blow on demand with wide format flexibility and the highest output.
