The EU recycled-content rules for PET beverage bottles are set, and qualifying a new blend on your line takes months — so this is a practical action list, not a legal explainer. For the mandate figures themselves, see what is rPET and how recyclable is PET.
1. Map your EU exposure
List every SKU that ships into the EU and its bottle format. Recycled-content obligations apply to packaging placed on the EU market, so a SKU sold in both EU and non-EU markets may need a compliant rPET version for the EU stream while staying virgin elsewhere. Know that split before you plan volumes.
2. Secure food-grade rPET early — it is the long pole
Only certified food-grade rPET, from an EFSA-authorised super-clean process, can go back into a bottle. Supply is tighter and dearer than virgin, and qualifying a new recycled-content blend on your line takes weeks to months. Lock supply and run the qualification well ahead of the deadline, not the quarter before — see the rPET food-contact buyer guide.
3. Design out recyclability penalties
Recycled content is only half the picture — the bottle must also recycle cleanly. Clear or light-blue PET, a PET-compatible label and a standard cap recycle best; heavy colour, full-sleeve labels, metallised layers or non-PET barriers downgrade the bottle in the recycling stream. Fix these at design time, not after.
4. Model cost and carbon together
rPET usually costs more per kilogram than virgin but cuts embodied carbon sharply. Model both for your target blend so procurement and sustainability read the same number — use the carbon calculator and the rPET cost vs CO₂ economics guide.
5. Qualify a supplier who can hold the blend
Not every preform maker runs high rPET reliably. Ask for the recycled-content range a supplier can hold, the food-grade authorisation reference, and sample preforms at your target blend to trial before committing — see how to evaluate PET preform suppliers.
Where Delta fits
Delta El Nile for Industry runs food-grade rPET on request — blends up to 100% on the Husky platform — and validates rPET-content preforms to your line and bottle. Give your recycled-content target and market split in the Smart RFQ Builder and we will confirm the achievable grade and weight.
