When a packaging buyer asks “is your supplier food-safe certified?” the answer they want is usually FSSC 22000. Here is what that certification actually means and why it should matter to you.
What FSSC 22000 is
FSSC 22000 (Food Safety System Certification) is a GFSI-recognised food-safety management certification. It is built on the ISO 22000 management standard plus sector prerequisites — ISO/TS 22002-4 for packaging — and additional FSSC requirements, all audited by an independent certification body.
Why a packaging buyer should care
It is third-party proof that the supplier runs a verified food-safety system: hazard analysis (HACCP), hygiene and prerequisite programmes, traceability and recall, and management commitment. That de-risks your supply and helps you pass your own customer and retailer audits without re-proving the basics.
FSSC 22000 vs ISO 9001 vs BRCGS
- ISO 9001 certifies a quality management system — important, but not food-safety specific.
- FSSC 22000 certifies food safety, and is GFSI-recognised.
- BRCGS is another GFSI-recognised food-safety scheme — many suppliers hold it alongside FSSC.
The strongest suppliers hold all three.
What is FSSC 22000 V6?
V6 is the current version of the scheme (in force since 2023), with sharpened requirements on food-safety culture, food fraud and environmental aspects — a higher bar than earlier versions.
