Closure Leakage Troubleshooting: Causes & Fixes

Closure leakage is rarely the cap alone — it’s usually the cap, the preform neck and the capper acting together. Diagnose in that order.

Most common causes

Isolate it fast

Start at the capper: verify application + removal torque on 30 bottles — see the 30-bottle torque check. Then confirm cap and neck are the same finish, and inspect the preform sealing surface for the defects in the defect guide. What is the most common cause of closure leakage?

Application torque set wrong — too low gives no seal, too high damages the liner or thread. Verify torque on 30 bottles first.

Can the preform neck cause leakage?

Yes — an oval/out-of-round neck or a sealing-surface defect (short shot, flash, contamination) breaks the seal even with a good cap.

How do I tell if it's the cap, the preform or the capper?
