Closure leakage is rarely the cap alone — it’s usually the cap, the preform neck and the capper acting together. Diagnose in that order.
Most common causes

| Neck-finish mismatch | Cap and neck not the same standard (e.g. 1810 cap on 1881) |
| Oval / out-of-round neck | Preform sealing surface not flat/round |
| Thread / sealing-surface defect | Short shots, flash, contamination on the finish |
| Liner / capper settings | Wrong liner, worn chuck, mis-set cap height |
Isolate it fast
Start at the capper: verify application + removal torque on 30 bottles — see the 30-bottle torque check. Then confirm cap and neck are the same finish, and inspect the preform sealing surface for the defects in the defect guide.
