How PET Preform Pricing Works: Resin, Weight & Volume

PET preforms are not a fixed-price commodity — a quote is built up from a few moving parts, and the biggest one tracks a global market. Understanding the build-up tells you where to negotiate and why a price quoted last quarter may have changed.

1. Resin — the largest single cost

Bottle-grade PET resin is usually 60–75% of a preform’s cost, so the resin price drives everything else. PET resin itself tracks crude oil and the paraxylene/MEG feedstock chain, so it moves monthly. This is why preform quotes are indicative and time-bound — when resin moves, the price moves with it, often on a published index or formula.

2. Gram weight — your biggest lever

Because resin dominates, the gram weight of the preform is the single thing that most changes your unit cost. Taking grams out — safely, without losing top-load — lowers resin spend on every shot. See how far you can lightweight before performance bites back.

3. Conversion cost

Conversion covers the injection machine time, energy, labour, mould amortisation and maintenance to turn resin into a finished preform. Higher cavitation and efficient Husky-class tooling lower the conversion cost per unit — which is why scale and line efficiency matter to your price.

4. Additives, colour and rPET

Masterbatch colour, UV blockers, barrier additives and food-contact rPET content all shift the price — rPET in particular is priced separately from virgin and can run above or below it depending on the recyclate market.

5. Volume, MOQ and logistics

Order size sets the per-unit overhead: larger, regular volumes amortise setup and run more efficiently. Then packing, freight and your Incoterm determine the landed cost. See lead time & MOQ for how volume shapes a quote.
