PET packaging cost is mostly resin, freight and tooling. Five levers move it the most — and each one can be sized before you commit.
1. Right-size the preform weight
Gram weight is the biggest cost driver. Removing a gram you do not need saves resin on every unit — but raises the stretch ratio, so validate it. Check candidates in the Preform Engineering calculator and the safe-lightweighting guide.
2. Choose the lighter neck finish
A shorter neck (PCO 1881 over 1810, or a lightweight water finish) trims PET on the preform and HDPE on the cap. See 29/25 vs PCO 1881.
3. Substitute rPET
Food-grade rPET often costs less than virgin and cuts carbon sharply. Model the cost and CO₂ trade-off in the Carbon Calculator and read rPET economics.
4. Fill the container
Freight per unit drops when each container is fully loaded. A lighter / shorter preform fits more per box and per 40 ft. Size it in the Container Calculator (see preforms per 40 ft).
