How to Qualify a New PET Preform Supplier: First-Article Approval Protocol

Qualifying a new PET preform source is a formal protocol, not a sample check — the discipline a first-tier brand runs through its quality and procurement teams before a single pallet ships. Here is the staged protocol that de-risks the decision.

Stage 0 — documents and audit

Before any part arrives, verify the system: FSSC 22000 (or BRCGS) certification, a food-contact Declaration of Conformity, the resin certificate of analysis (IV and AA), lot traceability, and real capacity for your volume. A supplier who cannot produce these on request will not survive an audit later.

Stage 1 — first-article inspection (FAI)

Approve the part against YOUR drawing, not a catalogue. Require a dimensional report covering neck finish (T, E, H, I), gram weight against ± tolerance, total length and body diameter, plus measured IV and AA versus spec. Decode every line with the read-a-drawing guide and the IV / AA tolerance guide.

Stage 2 — line trial on your equipment

A preform only passes on YOUR blow line. Run a trial and measure top-load, burst, thermal stability and stress-whitening against the incumbent; screen every defect with the Defect Library and the incoming-inspection routine.

Stage 3 — process capability, not one good box

Qualification proves repeatability. Ask for capability (Cpk) on the critical dimensions and weight, SPC evidence across shifts, and lot-level traceability — the PPAP-style pack that shows the process holds, not that one carton happened to be good.

Stage 4 — ongoing control

Approval is not permanent. Set an incoming AQL, a periodic SPC review and a re-audit cadence, and keep a fallback until several lots prove out — the same discipline as a planned supplier switch. See also how to evaluate and compare suppliers.

Qualify Delta

Delta El Nile for Industry supplies the full qualification pack — FSSC 22000 and food-contact documentation, a first-article dimensional report, IV / AA certificates and line-trial samples — so your team can run this protocol before committing volume. Send your drawing or spec in the Smart RFQ Builder and we match the SKU and provide the evidence.
